Good to know: What you should watch out for on Austrian motorways!

  • Toll-stickers are mandatory: On Austrian motorways, cars need to have a toll sticker (Vignette). You can buy this sticker at petrol stations, border checkpoints, ÖAMTC support points or even at tobacconists. On the website of the ÖAMTC, you can find out more about the different types of toll stickers and their prices. Note: If you’re coming from the South via the Pyhrn motorway A9, you’ll have to pay an additional toll fee when passing the Bosrucktunnel.
  • Emergency corridors: In the case of a traffic jam, cars must form an emergency corridor to ensure that the police, the fire department and ambulances can get through to the scene of an accident if necessary. Here’s how it works: All cars on the left lane keep left, all others move over to the service lane or, at least, as far to the right as possible.
  • Winter tyres and high visibility vests are mandatory: From November to April, cars must be equipped with winter tyres in Austria. Depending on weather conditions, they even need to have snow chains on board. Additionally, people must wear a high visibility vest as soon as they exit the car in the case of an accident or a breakdown.
