Skiing in Hinterstoder-Höss and on the Wurzeralm

What is Hinterstoder known for? Skiing, of course! The well-established ski and World Cup village Hinterstoder-Höss entices with its 40 kilometres of perfectly groomed slopes for every level of skill. The ski resort Wurzeralm contributes another 22 exciting kilometres of slopes – along with a number of rustic ski huts, an awesome snow park and the Sunny’s Kids Park. That’s how both little and grown-up snow bunnies feel right at home in Hinterstoder. And in case you’ve only just begun your career as a skiing pro, the ski schools are happy to offer support on your way to becoming a ski star.

Ski touring at the Alpine region Pyhrn-Priel

Up the mountain and out into the open terrain – and then back down into the valley through amazing powder snow and glorious firn. A true paradise awaits right outside your doorstep at the ALPRIMA Aparthotel. No wonder – the Kalkalpen national park makes for an amazing backdrop! And there are several gorgeous routes through the snow-covered winter landscape at the Totes Gebirge and Sensengebirge mountain ranges as well.

Cross-country paradise Hinterstoder

At the Pyhrn-Priel region surrounding Hinterstoder, a 120-kilometre network of cross-country trails in four different altitudes awaits you. Down in the valley or high up above – the utmost cross-country fun is guaranteed. There’s a total of 26 different cross-country trails to choose from. All you need to do is select the right one for your level of fitness and mood. Whether you want to leisurely glide through the landscape or have a fast-paced workout – you decide.

Don’t miss out on these cross-country trails in Hinterstoder:

  • Hinterstoder trail: leads you from the village along the Steyr river towards the end of the valley and past the Polsterlucke and Dietlgut restaurants
  • Hutterer Böden high-altitude trail: trail with guaranteed snow that leads from the middle station to the Edtbauernalm

Use of the high-altitude trails at the Wurzeralm and the Hutterer Böden in Hinterstoder is free of charge. Cross-country skiing anywhere else at the Pyhrn-Priel region costs  around EUR 4 per day. For those who can’t get enough: season tickets are available as well.

Speedy toboggan races for all ages

Tobogganing is fun for all ages. Whether for small children or grown-ups – tobogganing is irresistible. Because who doesn’t love to race down the mountain and through snow-covered forests? And the best part: tobogganing is so easy to do – everyone can do it. If you prefer to leave your own toboggan at home, you can rent one at the shops of Stodertal valley.

The absolute highlight is a floodlit natural toboggan run. Starting at the Landhotel Gressenbauer you can swoosh down into the valley along a distance of 1,2 kilometres. And in case you don’t want to walk up to the starting point at 800 metres above sea level, the toboggan taxi conveniently takes you there. We’re happy to reserve a spot for you!

Wading through the deep powder snow in snow shoes

You want to unwind and leave your everyday worries behind for a while? Then you should go on a snow shoe hike through the white winter wonderland of the Stodertal valley. Accompanied by the soft crunching sound of the snow underneath your feet, you’ll have some exceptional experiences out in nature. And in case you don’t want to explore the area by yourself, you may also participate in a guided snow shoe tour. The trained guides of the Kalkalpen national park will show you some of the most beautiful hidden spots of the region!

Winter hiking through the snow-covered Stodertal valley

A picturesque winter landscape surrounded by the rugged summits of the Totes Gebirge mountain range. What could be a better location for a long walk or winter hike? Discover Hinterstoder and its surrounding area on perfectly groomed winter hiking trails. Be sure to stop by at the many rustic inns where you can warm up and enjoy a hearty snack that gives you plenty of energy for the rest of the way.

A sport with a long-standing tradition: ice stock shooting

Ice stock shooting is an old sport with a long-standing tradition and unabated popularity in the Alpine region. But that doesn’t mean it’s outdated! Its focus is on spending time together outside in nature and having fun throughout the games. You would like to try ice stock shooting? Slip on some warm boots and a cosy jacket, and let’s go! At the two ice stock alleys in Hinterstoder, fun and action for all ages is guaranteed:

Romantic horse-drawn sleigh rides

Cuddled up under some warm blankets and enjoying the snow-covered landscape of the romantic Stodertal valley. Sounds good? Then don’t miss out on a horse-drawn sleigh ride. With a partner, with friends or with the whole family: Being pulled through a wintry fairytale landscape makes childhood dreams come true – gliding past the sparkly white trees always accompanied by the sound of the horses’ bells. Once you arrive at your destination, a breath-taking view across the picturesque Schiederweiher reveals itself – and right next to it, the steep rock faces of the Großer Priel mountain.

Experiencing Advent magic in Hinterstoder

Standing closely together, all wrapped up in warm clothes. A hot cup of mulled wine or punch in your hands. The smell of roasted chestnuts and freshly baked Christmas biscuits wafting through the air. Ah, that is Advent season in Austria! The small but quaint little Christmas market at the village centre of Hinterstoder – surrounded by a breath-taking mountain scenery – resembles a fairytale land. The lovingly designed and decorated booths of local associations, regional businesses and artists create a wonderful holly jolly atmosphere. Something well worth watching or, better yet, worth hearing is the Advent singing at the parish church Hinterstoder.
